Garage Door Sizes

The first step is to measure your garage door opening. More than 50% of homes built in Texas feature double-car garage doors, starting at widths of 16 feet and heights of 7 to 8 feet. Other dimensions can be custom-ordered to accommodate larger vehicles. Follow these step-by-step instructions to measure for your new garage door. All measurements should be in feet and inches.

Step 1: Measure both the width and height of the inside of the door opening. The dimensions should equal the size of your existing door.

Step 2: Measure the available wall space on both sides of the door to determine the side room. A minimum 3 ¾” is required for installation of the vertical track assembly.

Step 3: Measure from the top of the door opening to the ceiling. This ensures sufficient space for the door, overhead tracks, and extension or torsion springs.

Step 4: Measure the backroom; the distance from the door opening toward the back wall of the garage. Minimum measurement should equal height of the door plus 18”.
